 Haemorrhagic Disease of Newborn (HDN):

 Clinical features : 

  • 1)warning bleeds, which may seem insignificant
  • 2)low weight for your baby’s age
  • 3)slow increase in weight

Site:

Bleeding can occur in one or multiple areas, including:

  • 1)their umbilical stump, the naval area where 2)their umbilical cord was removed
  • 3)the mucous membranes of their nose and mouth
  • 4)their penis, if it’s circumcised
  • 5)areas where they’ve been stuck by a needle, for example, for vaccinations
  • 6)their gastrointestinal tract


Type: 

  • Early onset occurs within 24 hours of birth
  • Classic onset occurs within two to seven days
  • Late onset occurs within two weeks to six months

Causes: 

  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • Trauma
  • Clotting factor deficiency
  • Cows milk Allergy 

Investigation:

  • 1)BT -normal 
  • 2)PT-Prolong
  • 3)APTT-Prolong
  • 4)IgE 
  • 5)CBC
