Techniques of plaster of paris

Protocols

Plaster of paris Technique :


  • Instrument :
    • 1)Soft roll
    • 2)Water bucket
    • 3)scissor 
    • 4)micropur/Tap
    • 5)plaster of paris 

Prepare injured site :

  •  Fracture is reduced and assistant holds fimb in position of function, in a manner that is unobtrusive to the application of cast 
  • Stockinette & measured, extending Wan beyond determined imits of cast, and threaded over imb. Upper limbs: 2-3” wide; lower limbs: 4” wide 
  • Wool/soft roll padding is applied gently but snugly, starting from distal to proximal with 50% overlap between successive tums, extending 2"-3" beyond edges of splint 
  •  Padding is applied generally in 2 layers, but may be increased where there are bony prommnences or if significant swelling is antidpated 
  •  Padding sizes, hand: 2”, rest of upper imb: 3-4"; foot: 3”, rest of lower limb: 4-6” 


Advice:

Removing Plaster/Cast

Duration to keep Plaster or cast in situ: 

  • The time duration is much dependent upon the fracture site ,type,soft tissue condition and prope, follow up with radiograph and functional condition of the limb 

Roughly the time duration assume: 

  • For children: 
    • Upper limb-3 weeks 
    • Lower limb-—6 weeks 
  • For adult: 
    • Upper limb-6 weeks 
    • Lower limb-—12 weeks
