 Iodine deficiency (Goiter):

Clinical Features:

1)Fetus:

• Abortion 
• still birth 
• Brain damage

2)Neonate: 

• Neinatal goiter
• Brain damage

3)Children:

• Goiter
• poor school performance 
• Retadation of physical and mental growth 

Investigations: 

• 1)Radio iodine thyroid updake test- increase uptake
• 2)Radionucleoid thyroid scan 
• 3)TSH & T4 : increase TSH, decrease T4

Rx:

Cap. I cap (iodine) (200mg)

• 1 tab stat....... the...... every ...yearly 

If hypothyroid 

Tab.Thyrox(L-thyroxine)( 25 microgm)

• 1+0+0...(খালি পেটে সকাল বেলা/empty stomach at morning)..... continue

if large nodular Goiter : surgery 

 Prevention : 

• Intake iodine containing salt. 
  
• Intake iodine containing food
