Xerophthalmia :
Clinical Features:
- XN: Night blindness
- X1A: Conjunctival xerosis
- X1B: Bitot's spots
- X2 : Corneal xerosis
- X3A : Corneal ulceration — less than 1/3 of the cornea
- X3B : Corneal ulceration — more than 1/3 of the cornea
- XS : Corneal scars
- XF : Xerophthalmic fundus (In adult).
Investigations:
1)Plasma retinol values in children:
- Less then 0.35 mol/L - very deficient
- 0.35-0.7 umol/L — deficient
- 0.7-1.05 umol/L — marginal
- >1.05 umol/L — sufficient
2) The liver vitamin A concentration — lower than 20 ug/g.
