Protocols

Metabolic Alkalosis: 

Causes : 

  • 1)Prolonged vomiting
  • 2) NaHCO3 ingestion
  • 3) Cushing’s disease
  • 4) Conn’s disease


Para-meter : 

  • pH = > 7.4 
  • HcO3- = > 26 

Clinical Features:

  • 1)Confusion (can progress to stupor or coma)
  • 2)Hand tremor.
  • 3)Lightheadedness.
  • 4)Muscle twitching.
  • 5)Nausea, vomiting.
  • 6)Numbness or tingling in the face, hands, or feet.
  • 7)Prolonged muscle spasms (tetany)

Investigations: 

  • 1)ABG 
  • 2) Serum creatinine 
  • 3)Serum Electrolyte 
  • 4)LFT 
  • 5)CBC 

Rx: 

  • Treatment of underlying cause 
  • Saline infusion(cholera saline if vomiting)
  • Potassium replacement.
  • Magnesium replacement.
  • Hydrochloric acid infusion.
