Metabolic Alkalosis:
Causes :
- 1)Prolonged vomiting
- 2) NaHCO3 ingestion
- 3) Cushing’s disease
- 4) Conn’s disease
Para-meter :
- pH = > 7.4
- HcO3- = > 26
Clinical Features:
- 1)Confusion (can progress to stupor or coma)
- 2)Hand tremor.
- 3)Lightheadedness.
- 4)Muscle twitching.
- 5)Nausea, vomiting.
- 6)Numbness or tingling in the face, hands, or feet.
- 7)Prolonged muscle spasms (tetany)
Investigations:
- 1)ABG
- 2) Serum creatinine
- 3)Serum Electrolyte
- 4)LFT
- 5)CBC
Rx:
- Treatment of underlying cause
- Saline infusion(cholera saline if vomiting)
- Potassium replacement.
- Magnesium replacement.
- Hydrochloric acid infusion.
