 Respiratory Acidosis: 

Causes: 

  • 1)Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • 2)Asthma.
  • 3) pulmonary fibrosis.
  • 4)Obesity.
  • 5)Sleep apnea.
  • 6)Pneumonia 
  • 7)Pneumothorax 
  • 8)CNS Depression 


Parametter: 

  • pH = less then 7.4 
  • pCo2 = > 45 mmHg 

Clinical Features:

  • 1)Hyperventilating.
  • 2)Shortness of breath.
  • 3)Fatigue.
  • 4)Chronic exhaustion.
  • 5)Headaches.
  • 6)Drowsiness.
  • 7)Confusion.
  • 8)Sweating.

Investigations: 

  • 1)ABG 
  • 2) Serum creatinine 
  • 3)Serum Electrolyte 
  • 4)LFT 
  • 5)CBC 
  • 6)ECG
Rx: 
  • Treatment of underlying causes
  • Oxygen if the blood oxygen level is low.
  • Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (sometimes called CPAP or BiPAP) or a breathing machine, if needed.
  • Mechanical ventilation if needed
