9.Trichomoniasis

Protocols

Trichomoniasis:

2. Symptoms

  • Women: Vaginal discharge (often frothy and yellow-green with a strong odor), vaginal itching or irritation, discomfort during intercourse, and painful urination.

  • Men: Often asymptomatic but can include urethral discharge, irritation inside the penis, and burning during urination or after ejaculation.

3. Diagnosis

  • Microscopic Examination: Direct examination of a saline wet mount to identify motile trichomonads.

  • Culture: The most sensitive method before the advent of nucleic acid amplification tests.

  • Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs): These tests are now considered the gold standard due to their high sensitivity and specificity.

  • Rapid Antigen Tests: Provide results in approximately 10 minutes but are less sensitive than NAATs.
